February 20, 2015 – Hard to Love (Luke 6)

Love. We use that word every day. We use the word love in a variety of ways. The term love is used both to describe one’s affection for material goods and a close relationship with another person. In Luke 6:27-36, Jesus instructed that we are to love our enemies. It is easy to love those who love you. But your enemies? Now that is hard. It is hard to love someone who may hate you. Or to love someone who is disrespectful or speaks evil to you. But Jesus said that we are to pray for them and to love them. The only way that this can be done is if we have experienced the love of Jesus. Think about it. Jesus loved us when we were considered enemies. Because of our sin we were enemies of God, yet Jesus loved us. When we experience that love through a right relationship with Jesus it filters into other relationships in our lives. So how can we love our enemies? With the love of Jesus. Now it still is not easy to love those who are our enemies. We are still humans and we still struggle. We need to ask God to help us to love those who hurt us. Pray and ask God to give you an unconditional love for others and to help you be a Christ-like witness to them.
